Strings of the Heart (Runaway Train #3)

Chapter Twenty-One

As the sunlight streamed across my face, I woke slowly to the gentle sway of the bus driving down the interstate. Stretching in the bed, I found myself wrapped in a cocoon of sheets, along with the man I loved. For the past two days, Eli and Gabe had taken pity on Rhys and me and given us the bedroom on their bus. Well, I say pity. I think some money might have been exchanged to ensure our privacy. It was glorious getting to sleep with Rhys without having to worry about anyone barging in or Jake freaking out. Not to mention we had room to move as opposed to being cramped into a roost.

Glancing over my shoulder, I saw Rhys was still sound asleep. Wanting to give him a naughty wakeup call, I shifted in the bed before sliding the sheet down to his knees. While he remained dead to the world, his cock strained with its usual morning blood flow. I took it into my hand and stroked it a few times, bringing it to full mast.

After kissing a slow, wet trail down his chest and abdomen, I slid his hardness into my mouth. Rhys’s eyes remained closed, but his brows furrowed as if he was trying to decide whether he was enjoying real life or a dream. I continued to bob up and down on his erection, suctioning the tip and giving special attention to the sensitive head. At Rhys’s groan, I felt the slickness between my thighs begin to grow. His eyelids popped open. Rising up on his elbows, he stared down at me in surprise. With my eyes, I conveyed the message that there was nothing else in the world I wanted to be doing than sucking him off. “Oh f*ck, Allison. You sure know how to wake a man up,” he murmured, a pleased smile curving on his lips.

I continued stroking him with my hands and tongue. With my free hand, I cupped his balls, causing Rhys to groan again. His head fell back against the pillow while he thrust up his hips to fill my mouth even farther with his dick. As I continued to suck and lick his straining erection, Rhys’s hands came to my waist. When he started lifting me as if I weighed nothing at all, I stilled my movements, letting him fall free of my mouth. After emitting a gasp of surprise, I let Rhys turn and then slide my lower body across his chest. He eased me up on my knees where my p-ssy was directly over his face, and we were in a delicious 69 position.

Giving him head had already turned me on so much that there were beads of moisture trickling along my inner thighs. Rhys flattened his tongue against my skin and licked me dry. “You taste so f*cking good,” he said, his voice vibrating against my core.

I moaned when his tongue began to lick and suck my *. Once again, I took his erection in my hands and stroked it up and down. When my hungry mouth sucked him inside again, Rhys groaned against my *. The vibration caused me to shiver. His fingers came to spread me open to give his delicious tongue better access. He plunged deeper and deeper until I was moaning and groaning against his dick. Finally, it grew to be too much, and I pulled away, crying out as I came in hard shudders.

Rhys’s hands once again came to my waist. He gently turned me around to where I was facing him, my core rubbing against his dick. I rose up on my knees to straddle him better. Once I was in place, I took his erection in my hand and guided him to my ready entrance. As I slid inch by inch down on him, I whimpered as his fullness filled me. Glancing down at Rhys, I watched as he closed his eyes and bit his lip. “You feel so f*cking good around my dick,” he murmured.

“You feel good inside of me,” I panted, as I rose off him to slowly ease back down. We both groaned at the sensation. Placing my hands on his chest, I began to raise my hips on and off of him. Each time, he almost slid free of my body only to have me slam back down on him. As I began to ride him, Rhys’s hands came up to cup my breasts. His fingers tweaked my pebbled nipples, making them harder and more sensitive. When I met his gaze, I showed him with my eyes what I desperately wanted.

Rising up into a position, he brought his arms around my back—his fingers feathered light touches along my spine causing me to shiver. But he gave me what I wanted more than anything when he dipped his head to bring his warm mouth to my breast, sucking my nipple until I gasped with pleasure. Just when I thought I couldn’t stand the pleasure anymore, he slid over to my other breast, making me pant and cry out his name.

Cocking his head at me, he twisted his fingers through the strands of my hair, pulling my face down to where our eyes were on level with each other. “Tell me you love me,” he commanded.

I slowed down my frantic pace of riding him. Cupping his face in my hands, I smiled. “I love you, Rhys McGowan. I always have and always will.”

His hands feathered down my body to grip my hips. “And I love you, Allison Slater. You and only you.”

My heart began beating wildly in my chest at his declaration. No matter how many times I heard him say the words, they never got old. I’d waited too long and fought too hard to ever take them for granted.

Rhys began to push me on and off of him. Our mouths fused together as we sped up the soft and sweet rhythm from before into one that was more frantic. Wrapping my arms tight around his neck, I pressed my breasts flush against his chest. I loved the feeling of this position—the closeness and connection. I could feel Rhys tensing up, and I knew he was just as close as me. Pulling my lips from his, I stared into his eyes as we both went over the edge. Together.

We remained in bed late into the morning. After making a bathroom break, I’d thrown on one of Rhys’s T-shirts along with my panties. Rhys, however, remained naked under the sheet. As I lay with my cheek pressed to his chest, I could hear the gentle thump, thump of his heart beating. One of my hands was entwined with his. There was a white elephant in the room that neither one of us seemed to want to mention. It was the last day of the summer tour, and I was supposed to be returning to Savannah tomorrow to start classes on Monday. The weeks and months together seemed to have flown by at warp speed. I wanted nothing more than to slow time down to a standstill so I could savor each and every moment with him.

After an eternity of silence, Rhys cleared his throat. “I have something for you.”

I rose up to prop my head on my elbow. “You do?”

He nodded. “I hope it’s something to make leaving a little easier.” With my curiosity piqued, I reluctantly let him untangle himself from me. I got an appreciate eyeful of his ass when he got out of bed and strode over to his suitcase. It didn’t take him long to take out a box.

When he returned to the bed, he slipped under the covers again. “After we got together this summer, I kept thinking that I wanted to give you this to show you how much you mean to me.”

The size of the box gave me a little concern. It was most definitely a ring box. As much as I loved and cared for Rhys, I was most definitely not ready for an engagement ring. Not just yet. Not after we had been working on building a relationship and a life together.

With trembling fingers, I tore off the pink ribbon. An odd sense of déjà vu filled me. I was no longer in the bedroom on the bus. Instead, I was transported back to my Sweet Sixteen when Rhys had given me another gift with a pink ribbon. When I cracked open the box, I gasped.

Inside was a ring, but not the one I had feared. It was an oval disc with a magnolia just like the one Ellie had painted years before. Taking it in my hand, I saw that it was on a platinum band with diamonds encircling the magnolia. Even the bud of the magnolia was a yellow princess cut diamond. Tears filled my eyes, blurring the beautiful image before me.

“I didn’t think we were quite ready for an engagement ring, and even though they’re kind of passé, I liked the idea of a promise ring. I’m promised to you and only you for the rest of my life, Allison.” Considering my emotions were bubbling over, I could only nod my head. “I didn’t want to get just any ring. I wanted it to have meaning for us.” Reaching over, his fingers gripped my chin, tipping my head up so that I met his gaze. “And then it hit me—the magnolia. It’s the lasting symbol between us—the very string that tied our hearts together all those years ago.”

“Oh, Rhys,” I murmured, the tears flowing freely down my cheeks.

“I had Ellie paint another one for me, and then I took it to a jeweler I know who does unique pieces.”

“It’s…the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen,” I whispered.

He smiled. “Then it belongs on the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen.”

Unable to hold myself back any longer, I threw my arms around Rhys’s neck, holding him tight. When I pulled back, I feathered kisses all over his face. “I love you. I love you. I love you.”

Rhys chuckled. “I love you, too, babe.” Taking the box from me, he took out the ring. “Give me your hand.”

When I happily obliged, he slid it onto my left hand. “This signifies that you belong to me and only to me.”

Cocking my brows at him, I couldn’t help but counter, “And what about you? Where’s my ring to bind you to me?”

He held up his left hand in front of me and wiggled his fingers for a second. I stared blankly at his palm before my eyes honed in on his ring finger. I gasped. “Oh. My. God.” On the back of his ring finger was my name. Tattooed permanently in black ink. “When did you…how did you?”

Rhys laughed. “Yesterday when you and Abby were off shopping with the twins, I snuck into a tattoo parlor. I thought it made sense to do the inside now. Then when we get married, I’ll do the outside.”

For the life of me, I couldn’t think of what to say. I guess Rhys noticed because he asked, “Don’t you like it?”

“I love it,” I blurted.

He grinned. “I sure as hell hope so.”

I shook my head. “I just can’t believe you did that. For me.”

“For us,” he corrected.

Leaning over, I brought my mouth to his. “I love you, Rhys,” I murmured against his lips.

“I love you, too.”

After we made out for a few minutes, I pulled away, breathless and flushed. “If we don’t stop, I don’t think I’ll be able to walk today.”

Rhys chuckled. “I’m sorry. It’s just I can’t seem to get enough of you. And I guess it’s the thought of your departure tomorrow that makes me f*cking starved for every bit of you. I don’t want to be deprived of one minute of you.”

It was now or never time for me to take the white elephant by the trunk, so to speak. “I have a surprise for you, too,” I said.

“You do?” Rhys asked, his lips nuzzling my neck

My stomach turned a few nervous flip-flops as I braced myself to give him the news. “We're not going to be separated after all.”

Pulling back, Rhys stared questioningly at me. “What are you talking about?”

Over the last few weeks, I’d kept pretty silent about the plans I’d been making and the avenues I’d been exploring. I didn’t want to get Rhys’s hopes up before I knew with absolute certainty that things would work out. After exhaling a ragged breath, I said, “I'm not going back to Savannah. I'm going on the road with you.”

Several emotions ricocheted through Rhys's eyes before he started furiously shaking his head. “No, I'm not letting you do that.”

"Excuse me? Since when do I need your permission?”

“You can't just drop out of college, Allison. Not as hard as you have worked.”

“Oh really? I know someone else who did, and last time I checked, he's doing pretty well for himself.”

Rhys scowled at me. “My situation was totally different, and I did get my Bachelor’s degree in pre-law.”

“Actually, I think mine is a little better. I'll actually be working on my degree while doing more apprenticeship.”

His brows lined in confusion. “What do you mean?”

“I'm going to take some online classes. At the end of the day, I don't have to have a degree to launch my own clothing line. I need real world experience, and I'll be getting that with your stylist, Renee.”

“Do your parents know about this?” When I bobbed my head, Rhys groaned. “Great, just another f*cking reason for them to hate me.”

“Actually, Mr. Negative, they thought it was a great idea.”

“You’re shitting me?”

“No, I’m not. I’m still fulfilling the requirements of my degree while getting on-the-job training. In another year or two, I may have to go back to Savannah for a semester to finish up, but I will finish. I promise.” When Rhys remained silent, my lips turned down in a determined pout. “Don’t you want me to stay with you?”

He rolled his dark eyes at me. “Of course, I want you with me. I can’t imagine anything better. But at the same time, I don’t want you doing anything that you’re going to regret later on down the road.”

As I ran my fingers through his hair, I shook my head. “I could never regret one single thing about you.”

Cocking his head, he asked, “So you’re really coming out on tour with me?”

I grinned. “Yep, I am.”

“Good. ‘Cause I think that’s a f*cking amazing idea,” he replied, with a grin.

“I’m glad to hear you say that.” As Rhys pulled me back to lie down again, I peered up at him. “Now that we’ve got all that settled, I want you to buy me something.”

Rhys chuckled. “The ring wasn't enough for you?”

Gazing down at my left hand that glittered with his ring, I sighed with contentment. “It's more than enough.” I glanced up to stare pointedly at him. “Actually, what I want from you is more for the both of us.”

“Hmm, lingerie and sex toys?”

I smacked his arm. “Smart ass. That is NOT what I was talking about it.”

With his dark eyes twinkling with amusement, Rhys asked, “Then what is it?”

“A tour bus of our own.”

“So we can have privacy to defile every square inch?” he teased.

“Well, that will certainly be a plus, but I wasn’t exactly thinking on a sexual level.”

“Besides the privacy, what else would it be good for? A tax write-off?”

Brushing my hand across his cheek, I smiled. “I want to give you a home, Rhys.”

His expression momentarily darkened. I could tell from the emotions flickering in his eyes that he was reliving some of the painful aspects of his past. More than anything in the world, I wanted to help him move past all that—to give him a future filled with happy memories. “Let me give you a home, Rhys,” I repeated.

“You already have.” Covering my heart with his hand, he said, “Right here.”

Tears filled my eyes as I leaned over to kiss him. I let all the love I had for him pour out in those kisses. When I finally pulled away, Rhys smiled at me. Brushing his thumb across my cheek, he asked, “You won’t go crazy decorating it with frilly pillows and lace shit everywhere, will you?”

With a grin, I teased, “I can’t make any promises.”

He groaned. “Just don’t make it so over the top that my man card gets revoked by the guys.”

“I won’t. I like your man card, and your manhood, too much to do that.”

A devilish look twinkled in his eyes. “You do, huh?”

“Mmm, hmm.”

In a flash, Rhys rolled us over to where I was on my back. “I think I know how to solve that problem about you not being able to walk today after too much sex.”

“Oh, what’s that?” I questioned breathlessly, as he ground his growing erection against my core.

“I’ll just have to carry you,” he replied with a wink.

“My pervy, yet chivalrous, knight in shining armor. You’ve been looking out for me since I was just a kid.”

Rhys’s teasing expression turned serious. “And I’ll never stop. Ever.”

Deep down, I knew he never would. Although times might get tough and the path might be rough, we would somehow have our happily ever after. Our heartstrings were irrevocably intertwined.
